Former Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury detained, taken to DB office
Former Speaker of the National Assembly Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury has been arrested by the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB). She was arrested from a house in Dhanmondi in the capital early Tuesday.
DB Additional Commissioner Shafiqul Islam told Prothom Alo this morning that Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury has been arrested and brought to the DB office. She is now in DB custody.
Later, DB Joint Commissioner Mohammad Nasirul Islam told Prothom Alo that Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury was arrested from the house of one of her relatives this morning. The cases against her are being reviewed. Then she will be sent to court in a specific case.
The former speaker resigned on September 2, 2024, 27 days after the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government. Abdul Hamid was elected speaker after the Awami League came to power in the 2008 election. When he was elected president, Shirin Sharmin was elected speaker on April 30, 2013. She has been in this position since then.
A case has been filed against Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury in connection with the violence during the July mass uprising. On August 27, 2024, a murder case was filed against Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury, former Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi and 17 others in connection with the shooting death of goldsmith Muslim Uddin (38) in Rangpur.
The case was filed in the Metropolitan Kotwali Administrative Court by Dilruba Akhter (32), the wife of the deceased Muslim Uddin of East Ganeshpur area of Rangpur city. Tipu Munshi is in jail after being arrested in the murder case.
Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury was elected as a member of parliament from Rangpur-6 constituency.
