Members of a smuggling ring with gold and foreign currency arrested at Shahjalal Airport

Mofidul Islam was arrested with illegal gold and foreign currency. He was arrested at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Thursday afternoon.

The Airport Armed Police Battalion (APBN) has arrested a man named Mofidul Islam (43) with about 500 grams of gold ornaments and a large amount of foreign currency illegally brought to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka. He was arrested from the open car parking area of ​​​​the arrival canopy-2 of Shahjalal Airport on Thursday afternoon.

A press release from APBN-13 said that the arrested Mofidul Islam arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka from Saudi Arabia on a flight at around 10:45 am on Thursday as a muallem of the Umrah Hajj caravan. He is a resident of Luantchara police station in Khulna district. After the arrest, he was taken to the airport APBN office and 499.1 grams of gold ornaments were recovered from his handbag. In addition, 9 thousand US dollars, 8 thousand 501 Saudi riyals, 1 thousand 800 Egyptian pounds, 150 Romanian leu and 80 thousand 117 taka were seized. The market value of the recovered gold ornaments is about 83 lakh 84 thousand 880 taka. The value of the gold ornaments is 21 carats, APBN said.

The press release further said that during initial interrogation, Mofidul Islam told APBN officials that these golds were brought to Bangladesh by evading customs through unknown passengers from different countries. He had been associated with a smuggling ring for a long time and had been working as a carrier. A case has been registered against him at the Airport Police Station under Section 25B(1)(b) of the Special Powers Act, 1974.

In this regard, Airport (13) Armed Police Battalion Police Superintendent Mohammad Rezaul Kabir said, “APBN is active in preventing smuggling and other crimes in the airport area. Their activities will continue to prevent any kind of smuggling using the airport.”
